Lai Wah Restaurant @ Bendemeer Road

Lai Wah Restaurant is a history which is even older than the birth of Singapore as a nation. Opened in 1963, it was helmed by 2 of the former 4 Heavenly Kings of Chinese cuisines in Singapore at that time.

Although the restaurant has moved away from its former Jalan Besar location, it still retains the old style Chinese restaurant look, especially the entrance. I believe restaurants back in the 1970s have identical entrances.

The interior also retains those 1970s look, according to my mother. The glasses are those big heavy glasses and the plates and bowls are those traditional Cantonese plastic tableware.

Recommended by many TV shows, this restaurant is famous for a number of dishes such as Chicken with Ham and Kailan, Yam Basket, Vension Hor Fun, etc. And of course, this restaurant claims that they are the first in Singapore to invent the Yusheng. This "1st restaurant" title is also claimed by other restaurants too.

Venison Hor Fun - I came here specially for this dish. They serve one of the best vension hor fun in Singapore. Unlike beef, the vension meat here is tender and does not has the "gamey" taste nor smell. The "See-Chup" sauce made from preserved black beans made the sauce looked black. It is also fried with diced green and red capsicans. Would recommend all new customers to order this instead of the usual fried rice or fried noodles.

Chilled Jellyfish, Chicken and Ham - Another of our favourite family dish. This is served chilled. If you like those jellyfish served during the cold platter dishes, then you will love this dish.

Deep Fried Minced Prawns and Pork with Tofu Skin - Recommended by the boss, but I don't really enjoy this dish. The tofu skin is not crispy and the fillings aren't great too.
